Verona
Verona's surroundings
In the beautiful city of Verona you can find ample
and significant evidence documenting every period in the long and intense history of this city.
Here is an itinerary to visit the city.
Let's start from Piazza Bra where the Romans built a grandiose work the Amphitheater,
called Arena, famous now for the opera season.
From Piazza Bra take Via Mazzini, a walking street full of shops! At the
end of the street take your right to see the famous "balcony" of Juliet (Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare)
where it is supposed to be her house.
Going back on the street you find Piazza delle Erbe, once the Roman forum,
became the site of the Communal offices and
Merchant's associations. The palazzo Comunale rises between Piazza delle Erbe and
Piazza dei Signori and encloses Cortile Mercato Vecchio with the 15th century Scala della
Ragione and the majestic Torre dei Lamberti.
Piazza dei Signori became and extension of the Prince's Palace, used for ceremonies and parades. The Palazzo Comunale was soon flanked by the Palazzo del Capitano, by the red Palazzo Cangrande next to the gothic Arche Scaligere (burial place for the Scaligeri dynasty) and the Loggia del Consiglio.
From Piazza dei Signori take Via Sottoriva reaching Piazza Duomo. At the end
of the street you'll have a great view on the Ponte Pietra and the Roman
Theater on the S. Pietro hill.
From piazza Duomo reach Castelvecchio that was and impressive
fortified residence.
From here following the Adige river you reach
the Basilica of San Zeno, a masterpiece of the Italian
Romanesque architecture, it is the most important religious monument in the city.
There are many places in the surrounding's of Verona
that are worth a visit, starting from the scenic wonders of the river Adige,
going to the mountain Lessini and the shores of the Garda lake.
Here we just give a couple of suggestions:
Soave: the town, surrounded by an ancient wall with
24 towers, is dominated by the impressive castle which commands the surrounding
hills and plain with its many treasures: the Palazzo di Giustizia, dating from
the municipal era; the Palazzo del Capitan; the 14° century residence of the
powerful Counts Sambonifacio; the 15° century Palazzo Pullici; Palazzo Cavalli,
an elegant building of the Venetian period, the front of which is lightened by
a magnificent gothic triple lancet window.
Soave is also a wine town and has a wine road taking you to producers,
sellers, restaurants, historical and architectural beauties!
Borghetto: nice village on the Mincio river,
where you find old mills that reminds you the village economy has always been
related to the river activities. Impressing is the view of the near dam "Ponte
Visconteo" 600 m. long.
Take a walk towards Borghetto to see a sunset on the Mincio river or when the fog
wrap up all the houses ... it will be as going back in the medieval time!
